The Events

The Alpine Disciplines are divided into:

TECHNICAL EVENTS
GIANT SLALOM
SLALOM

SPEED EVENTS
DOWNHILL
SUPER-G

COMBINED
ALPINE COMBINED

Technical Events:

Slalom

Gates are spaced more closely together, than in other alpine events requiring quicker and shorter turns. The Course is reset in between the first and second run. There are no practice runs allowed. Athletes can only side slip (move slowly sideways) down the course to visualise how they will ski it.
Technical Events:

Giant Slalom

Involves skiing between gates spaced at a greater distance from each other than in slalom but less than Super-G.
Technical Events:

Scoring

Athletes do two runs, the times are added together, and the total time determines the winner.
Speed Events:

Downhill

Unlike other Alpine events, Downhill emphasiSes the six components of technique, courage, speed, risk, physical condition and judgement. Speeds of up to 130 km/h (81 mph) are common in international competition.

Athletes must have an aerodynamically efficient tuck position to minimiSe drag and increase speed.
Speed Events:

Super G

Much like Downhill, a Super-g course consists of widely set gates that racers must pass through. The course is set so that skiers must turn more than in Downhill, though the speeds are still much higher than in Giant Slalom.
Speed Events:

Scoring

Each athlete only has one run to clock the best time.
Combined Events:

Alpine Combined

A speed race (Downhill or Super-G) and one run of Slalom, with both portions scheduled on the same day.
Combined Events:

Scoring

The winner is the skier with the fastest aggregate time from both the Speed and Slalom runs.
