GB Snowsport signals commitment to environmental sustainability

Ahead of International Mountain Day 2021, GB Snowsport has affirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability by joining the British Association for Sustainable Sport

We are delighted to announce our membership of the British Association for Sustainable Sport (BASIS), the sustainability hub for sport in the UK.

For more than a decade, BASIS has driven the growth in understanding, expertise and commitment on sustainability in sport, helping members to shape and achieve their sustainability goals and deliver a positive environmental impact through sport.

The future of our sport relies on all of us taking action now to protect our environment, and we are committed to playing our part with membership of BASIS marking a first step in our sustainability journey.

Speaking to BBC Sport ahead of the COP26 summit earlier this year, GB Snowsport Freestyle Skier, Gus Kenworthy, explained that climate change is an issue “nobody can look away from” and called for everybody to “do our own part to try and stop or slow the impact of climate change.”

Through BASIS membership, GB Snowsport joins a host of leading clubs and governing bodies in securing a place in the top tier of sustainability in sport.

Chris Scott, Head of External Relations. GB Snowsport said:

“We are delighted to join BASIS. From helping sport reduce waste, save water and transition to renewable energy, to preparing sport for the impacts of climate change, BASIS has led the way on sustainability in our sector. Environmental responsibility is a key priority for us and is particularly important to our sport’s long-term future. Our membership of BASIS, and our commitment to share in their work, signals our intent to commit to that work.”

Dr Russell Seymour, BASIS Founder and CEO, said:

“Our mission is to bring sport together to deliver a more sustainable future – rooted in our conviction that sustainability is good for sport at every level, and our fierce belief in the power of sport to deliver a positive impact for everyone. There is growing momentum around sustainability in sport, and GB Snowsport’s commitment is another big step forward. We warmly welcome them into our membership and look forward to working with them to deliver positive environmental impacts in the months and years ahead.

This year’s International Mountain Day campaign is focused on the importance of sustainable tourism in mountains, and calls on the world to recognise them as natural jewels that the world should treasure. By announcing our membership of BASIS today, we aim to show our support for this important message and our commitment to playing our own part in that mission.
