Candidate Brief
The Opportunity
British snowsport has just completed its most successful four-year cycle in history. Our athletes are competing and winning on the world stage, across Olympic and Paralympic events in thirteen disciplines, from Alpine, Nordic, and Freestyle to Snowboard, Speed Skiing, Telemark and Freeride.
GB Snowsport (GBS) is the National Governing Body for skiing and snowboarding in the United Kingdom. We represent every British athlete competing under the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS), through to Olympic and Paralympic level. We are now seeking a new Chair to build on this momentum and take the organisation to its next stage of growth and sustainability.
This is a high profile, strategically significant role. It offers the opportunity to help shape the future direction of winter sport in the UK, to represent GBS at the highest levels nationally and internationally, and to ensure our athletes have the environment they need to succeed.
The Role
As Chair, you will hold an Independent Non-Executive position, accountable to the GBS Board, with the Chief Executive reporting directly to you. Key responsibilities include:
- Strategy Leading the Board in setting and promoting GBS’s strategic direction, and guiding consideration of policy proposals with regard to their practical and financial implications.
- Governance Chairing Board meetings to ensure discussions are open and inclusive, and that decisions are reached through the effective contribution of all directors. Ensuring Board effectiveness through regular evaluation of the Board and its members.
- Standards Setting the tone for the values and behaviours expected across the organisation, and ensuring GBS upholds high standards of propriety, in line with the Nolan Principles and all relevant laws and regulations.
- Stakeholder Relations Maintaining strategic relationships with UK Sport, FIS, the British Olympic Association (Team GB), ParalympicsGB and the Home Nations Snowsport Governing Bodies, to secure the best possible environment for athlete success.
- Representation Acting as a public face of GBS, including presiding over the AGM, and representing the organisation at high level national and international forums as required. Promoting participation and diversity across all GBS disciplines as an ambassador for the sport.
- Oversight of the Executive Holding the CEO to account for the delivery of Board decisions, while supporting a high level of staff morale and motivation. Supporting the executive team and fundraising committees in their fundraising efforts.
- Accountability Leading the Board’s oversight of financial planning and reporting, and ensuring the organisation manages conflicts of interest appropriately.
Person Specification
- A proven track record of successful leadership
- Experience of chairing board meetings
- Strong financial and commercial acumen
- Personal integrity
- Excellent communication skills
- The ability to act as spokesperson and figurehead for the organisation
- Relevant knowledge of, and passion for, snowsport
- An understanding of the snowsport and broader sporting landscape in the UK
Time Commitment
This is a part time, voluntary role, with reasonable expenses covered. The expected time commitment is a minimum of two to three days per month. The Board holds four scheduled meetings each year, all in London, alongside a monthly video call with fellow Independent Non-Executive Directors and a separate monthly call with the CEO. The Chair also presides over the Annual General Meeting once a year.
