GET TO KNOW SNOWSPORT SCOTLAND

Snowsport Scotland is the governing body for snowsports in Scotland and works in partnership with like-minded organisations to encourage more people to get involved in snowsports and to support athletes to perform on the world stage.

The 2019-20 winter season has seen much progress made in Scottish snowsports. Scottish athletes continue to be well represented on GB Snowsports training squads, with a total of 32 athletes currently represented across our core disciplines (Alpine, Park & Pipe and Nordic).

Standout performances last season include: Charlie Guest winning the Europa Cup; Alex Tilley achieving a string of top 30 finishes on the World Circuit (Alpine); Kirsty Muir placing 2nd in Big Air and 4th in Slopestyle at the Junior Olympics; Matt McCormick achieving a number of top 20 placings on the World Circuit (Park and Pipe); Andrew Young achieving his first top 10 World Cup in distancing racing along with a number of top 15 placings in both sprint and distance; James Clugnet achieving his first individual top 10 World Cup result in Are, Sweden; and James Slimon becoming only the 2nd Scottish nordic skier to compete at the Youth Olympics (Nordic).

The 2019-20 season also marked the resurgence of the Scottish Alpine Team, with 2 training squads selected (U16 and FIS). These squads were supported through a mix of on-snow training and competition camps abroad, Scottish Institute of Sport off-snow support sessions and regular domestic coaching and fitness opportunities. Thanks to a new funding partnership between GB Snowsport and Snowsport Scotland, 2 jointly funded coaches worked alongside Scottish Park & Pipe “B team” athletes throughout the season (Freeski and Snowboard); and 6 athletes were part of the inaugural 5 month training camp in Lillehammer, led by the jointly funded National Performance Nordic Coach. These performance pathway programmes play a critical role in ensuring that more Scottish athletes perform on the world stage and that Scotland makes an active contribution to the GB Snowsports vision of being “a top 5 snowsports nation by 2030”.

3816 participants were involved in competitions and events delivered or supported by Snowsport Scotland last season. A further 1500 new participants were involved in Snowsport Scotland national programmes. As we gear up for the 2020-21 season, Snowsport Scotland is hoping to reach more new snowsports participants than ever before.

Thanks to new funding from the GB Snowsports Foundation, our roller ski (Nordic) in-school programme is scheduled to engage over 750 students in a 4 week programme; following the success of our Women and Girls Futures (Park & Pipe) pilot last season we will be looking to offer scaled up events across the Country;. Other priorities include the continued roll out of our Tertiary and College Alpine Novice Racing Series and partnering with the Scottish Snowsports Association to deliver more events to school-aged children across Scotland.
