GBS Results Round-Up: 2024 ends and 2025 begins with World Cup podiums

Mia Brookes and Andrew Musgrave delivered podiums across a brilliant week for British snowsport

Brookes goes back-to-back with Klagenfurt victory

Mia Brookes’ Big Air brilliance was on show in the first Freestyle Snowboard World Cup of 2025, as she delivered a spectacular performance to clinch Gold in Klagenfurt. While nominally considered a Slopestyle rider, Brookes’ increased confidence in Big Air has reaped rich dividends across the 2024/25 season with her first two World Cup victories, each secured with a cab-1440 which is fast becoming a trademark trick.

Brookes’ victory continues an epic battle with Japan’s Mari Fukada, with the two January 2017-born riders notching World Cup victories this year, with Fukada second two Brookes in both Beijing and Klagenfurt.

In the Men’s Snowboard Big Air, Txema Mazet-Brown finished in ninth spot to deliver a career-best World Cup performance, secured with an exceptional qualifying round performance on an extremely challenging city jump.

The Freeski competition, meanwhile, saw outstanding performances from both Chris McCormick and James Pouch, who each secured a career-best Big Air World Cup finish, taking 12th and 16th positions respectively, with McCormick desperately unlucky to miss out on a spot in Finals.

Musgrave’s 20km F podium caps excellent Tour de Ski showing

Andrew Musgrave delivered the best Stage World Cup performance of his career to date with a superb third place showing in the 20km F leg of this year’s Tour de Ski, in the final World Cup contest of 2024. Finishing in a time of 44:33.7, Musgrave was less than 10s behind second place and only 28.4s off the Gold medal spot as the 34-year-old secured the fifth World Cup podium of his career, three of which have come in the past three seasons.

Elsewhere in the Tour de Ski, Musgrave’s 13th place in the Skiathlon 10km/10km C/F leg was the highest non-podium finish, while James Clugnet’s SP F 33rd place and Andrew Young’s 20km F 25th place marked other standout results.

Lane and ROthney secure EC Freestyle Snowboard Bronzes

Charlie Lane and Emily Rothney both took the first Europa Cup podiums of their careers in the Font Romeu Slopestyle EC Premium event over the weekend, with each coming third in the Men’s and Women’s competitions respectively.

For 17-year-old Lane the result marks a first podium since dual top-3 finishes at the 2023 European Youth Olympic Festival following a long spell of injury that disrupted his 2023/24 season, while 16-year-old Rothney followed up a breakthrough performance at last year’s Junior World Championships with her first EC podium.

Both results came in stacked fields, showing the significant promise on display for the next generation of British Freestyle Snowboard talent.
