Freddy Carrick-Smith wins GB’s first ever Alpine EYOF Gold

17-year-old takes GS top spot in Bakuriani after lightning second run

Freddy Carrick-Smith delivered a stunning performance at the opening Alpine race of the 2025 European Youth Olympic Festival, taking Gold in the Boys’ Giant Slalom and with it Team GB’s first medal of the Bakuriani Games.

After a first run in which he sat second with a time of 49.27s, Freddy delivered the fastest second run in the field, finishing in 48.44s, to claim top spot, 0.67s ahead of Norway’s Storm Andre Hagen, and 1.23s clear of Ziggy Vrdoljak of Croatia in third.

The performance gives Britain a stellar start to the latest edition of the European Youth Olympic Festival, in which a total of 20 British athletes including 15 snowsport athletes have been selected to compete. It also marks a first ever EYOF Alpine medal for a British skier, following on from Freddy’s twin brother Zak’s achievements in winning Britain’s first medals at an Olympic Alpine event in Gangwon at the Youth Olympic Winter Games last year.

Today’s races saw Zak Carrick-Smith finish in fifth place, just over half a second off the podium, with fellow Brits Hamish Blyth and Toby Stephen coming in 17th and 34th spots respectively.
